It has been a good 20 years since I have been to NYC. Spent some time in my childhood growing up in upstate NY and my sister went to college in NYC for a couple years. Wow has that place changed, and not from all the political talking points. There is just too many dang people that go there now. I have done the Macy's parade in late 90s and NYE Times Square in mid 90s and I felt this Christmas Day walking around the city was busier than both of those.

I guess my suggestion to anyone wanting to do the NYC Christmas, go during the week and before Christmas. We did get to enjoy snow in the city, which helped quiet the place down for some time. We came out of Hamilton to a very decent snow storm, and that did add some magic to the trip.

Side note - If you fly into or out of JFK, it is a dang breeze to get to/from Penn Station now. Easier than cab or Uber. One train to Jamaica station and one train to Penn Station.

My wife and I thought the same after going there Dec 17-21. The weekdays were fine. We could barley get down the street Friday and Saturday. But we were staying a half block from Times Sq. Other places in the city were OK.
