Looking to go maybe in May. Plan is to fly into/out of San Diego and rent a car in Tijuana and then driving down and around. Never been so looking for refs regarding towns, hotels, wineries, etcs...

You mean tequila right?
Head past Tijuana down the coast and go to Ensenada. Had a great time there. There’s a place call La Bufadora not too far away which is a really cool blowhole coming up from the sea.

No, he means wine from the Valle de Guadalupe near Ensenada. Lovely place.
I have two recommendations based on the trip we took in 2015:
1. Rent the car in San Diego and drive across the border. Works much easier from an insurance standpoint.
2. Hire a tour guide for the Valle de Guadalupe. We used Fernando Cuevas through tours inbaja (easy to find on facebook). He picked us up where we were staying in Rosarita and did all the driving along the Ruta de Vino. Very engaging fellow with good english and a lot of knowledge. We went to four wineries (Tres Mujeres, L.A. Cetto, Sol de Media Noche, and ALXimia) and had a spectacular lunch at the last one. We thought it was well worth the money!

Thanks. Curious - why do you recommend a guide over self-directed?

It got us better access at a couple of spots and frankly I didn’t want to have to worry about navigating/driving strange roads in a foreign country while under the influence. Made it much easier to enjoy it for our group. YMMV.
ETA: Nearly forgot, he also set up the lunch ahead of time. It might have been fine for a bunch of gringos to just show up (there were 6 of us and we were the only ones there, as it was late March which is a bit off-season), but it worked out great the way we did it. Was essentially a private lunch in a beautiful setting with delicious food and wine!
