I've been 13 times and loved every minute I spent in Athens and wished I had spent more time on at least a few trips. There is far more to Athens than the Acropolis.
We spent 3 nights in Athens to end our Greek trip. While we enjoyed the islands more, Athens wasn't just some throwaway time on our trip. We enjoyed exploring the city. The Acropolis is amazing, as well as several other ancient sites. We enjoyed being on the streets in the evening among the crowds and the al fresco dining scene is awesome.
Sure it's dirty in places, but that's just about every major city in the world. Not sure why it gets so much hate on here, maybe its because most people equate a Greek vacation with the islands, and Athens is a whole different vibe.

Think you might’ve hit the nail on the head, I always hear this from people doing island-hopping tours and only going to Athens on the mainland (probably because their international or intercontinental flights were routed there to start with).

Been to Santorini and Mykonos. Was there with an ex-girlfriend back in 2018.
For a Honeymoon, I would consider both again.
Santorini is more quiet and romantic -- one of the most fun days I ever remember in my life is renting a 4-wheeler and riding it all over the island that day.
Mykonos is the party spot. I hate clubs in the US, but I love outdoor European clubs during the day and places like Scorpios are a ton of fun. Would definitely not rent a 4-wheeler to ride there
People drive like maniacs in Mykonos on the roads.

I suspect a fair amount of it is parroting. People might spend a night and then hop a flight or ferry to the islands and don't know a whole lot about Athens, but they have heard from others that it's just big and dirty and not worth visiting and just repeat it.
