I'm flying to Shanghai next week for my first international trip. 12 hrs difference from Eastern time zone.
ATL>LAX 8:47am-10:25am 4hrs 38min
LAX>PVG 1:05pm-5:55pm 13hrs 50min
+ 2.5-3hrs in a car to Changzhou.
When should I try to sleep? Should I take any sleep aids?

You know what I did? I got drunk my first night in Europe. So I was passed out by 4pm local time and then was able to wake up at 6am. Never had an issue with waking up as the GF it took her 3 days to acclimate.

Yeah just sleep when you get there, also try to get out in the sun as much as possible the first couple of days.

I've flown to India, and I flew to Thailand out of Shanghai this past January. I handle the jet leg issue extremely well in those time zones. For whatever reason, the 12 hour flip thing just works for me. Just put your clock to Asia time and start working your sleep to it. The plane flight takes so long you'll be pretty close by the time you arrive if you do it right.
I'm 1/2 for Europe. Greece, no problem. Spain? Was siesting every afternoon, never got right. Exhaustion hit every afternoon. Then again, when I went to Greece, I landed at 10AM and started partying immediately.

I stayed up about this long going to India but I was fricking pumped with adrenaline and flying economy. Even had a 7 hour layover in Amsterdam where we landed in the morning and I took the train into the city for a few hours.
Last time to Asia was all business class so the whole thing was a breeze and I took some naps.
