This may be the entirely WRONG board and if so I apologize...recently bought a new boat and want a name...I’ve came up with “Sha beau bébé” am I correct in that would mean sweet/dear beautiful baby? Sorry dads a yankee moms a redneck, French doesn’t run in the family lol

Well, even in Parisian French,
quote:

beau bébé

would be "Beautiful Baby" - so I would just go with that.

Do you consider your boat female or male? I ask, because it matters in French. If, like many, you consider it to be female, the correct phrase, with proper accents, is:
chère belle bébé
Which means dear beautiful baby. The "sha" is actually spelled chère.

If the boat is male, it would be cher beau bebe.

And actually, it would be spelled "Cher".

I'm not Cajun, but I think that "Cher beau bébé" would be redundant. "Cher bébé" and "Beau bébé" probably hold the same connotation.

I don't know if Cajuns always write out the accents, either, but I think they would in a formal setting (like a boat name).

I think all of this is correct and most boats are presumptively female (unless it has a dude's name or whatever).

Not really: cher is "dear", and beau is beautiful. It isn't an especially common phrase of endearment, but it's not technically wrong. We're just conditioned to hear "cher bebe" to the point where even non-French speakers use it.

It's also a more general expression of affection, even about non-humans, although "cher bete", pronounced more or less "shad'bet" with a funny sort of elision between the two words that swallows the final r and kinda turns it into a d sound. It means dear little thing (literally dear beast).

Makes me happy that someone is putting a French name on a new boat. Also reminds me that I need to paint the damn bottom of my bateau.

Are you looking for the Louisiana French Creole or Cajun language?

They are different, but very similar.

I’m pretty fluent in French which isn’t that different from cajun french or Louisiana creole.

Cher bébé is what you’re looking for. A lot of people here pronounce it “sha” much like they pronounce cul as “chu”

Y’all are awesome! Thanks for the help and all the info for sure...I wanted a French name bc I was born and raised in LA and love this swamp for better or worse!

The boat is definitely a girl lol, i can’t see myself calling another male beautiful in any language LOL!

I again appreciate all yalls help and info, if nothing else this gives me an appreciation for the families that have kept our ancestors legacies alive and well! Once I get the vinyl cut and put on I’ll come back and post the pics for y’all :) GEAUX TIGERS

I was talking to my cousin the other day about how it’s kinda sad to see the french language fade around here. (We’re from avoyelles) you still hear older folks speak it and some businesses and local places are making an effort to put ads and signs up in both languages. Anyone who grew up with a french speaking grandpa will always call a night heron a gros bec, I assure you that.
