Cancun to Cozumel

Family going to cancun for 3 nights all inclusive then 5 nights in cozumel at VRBO.
I'm leaning towards renting a car in cancun after our stay there then drive to ferry and ferry rental over to cozumel for our stay there. Is this a bad idea?

If you decide to rent, check out https://www.america-carrental.com/ Your credit card protections don't work for insurance in Mexico and if you rent at the airport there are a ton of extra fees. Last time we researched and rented down there, this was the best company for the money.
