BANFF ITINERARY 7/20-7/25

•Flew into Calgary (YYC), picked up rental car, about 1.5 hours away from downtown Banff

•Recommend staying in downtown Banff. Tons of hotels to choose from right on the main avenue

Itinerary

Thursday
-Landed in Calgary 4:45pm
-Rental car @ Calgary Int’l Enterprise
-Checked in to Fox Hotel & Suites
-Dinner at Maple Leaf (fine dining, great outdoor seating) @ 8pm
-Walked around downtown Banff, got what we needed for room: water, snacks, etc.

Our balcony on Banff Ave.

Friday: exploring Banff and nearby lakes
-6am coffee run at White Bark, walked around downtown, walked down to bridge at end of Banff Avenue and look back at the iconic Cascade Mountain

-back to room to get ready for day
-Breakfast 9am Juniper Bistro (great outdoor seating with views of mountains, Bow River. Great menu).

-Explore Fairmont at Banff Springs, little hikes around there, walk to Bow Falls behind the hotel

-Stop at grocery store for hiking fuel: sandwich stuff, snacks, bear spray + whistle (we got ours at Home Hardware downtown)
-Walk around downtown Banff
-Drive 15 min to Lake Minnewanka. Easy hikes around lake. Beautiful drive
-Two jacks lake right next to Minnewanka

-Early dinner at Hello Sunshine Sushi
-Banff Gondola at Sulphur Mountain summit. Book in advance as it’s more expensive the day of ($80 a person, but a very cool experience, scariest gondola ride to top). Walk the skywalk up in the mountains, check out each floor, restaurants, coffee, live music up there.

-Headed back to Banff
-Ice cream at The Cow. Get ready for a long line
-Another option: Little Wild Coffee by Wild Flour for gelato
-Quick drive to Surprise Corner Viewpoint for epic views of Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

-Back to room to prepare sandwiches, pack camelbacks for hike tomorrow

Saturday: Lake Louise & Moraine Lake
-Have a pre made breakfast + snacks at the hotel
-You will need to buy your “last minute” shuttle tickets on the Parks Canada website 48 hours in advance to go to Louise & Moraine, can’t drive your own car in anymore.
-3:30am alarm clock to get to designated pick up spot on time (about 45 min drive from downtown Banff)
-Start at Moraine Lake: Rock pile trail - best view of Moraine Lake, low effort + high reward, 0.5 miles total, watch the sunrise here

-Other smaller hikes at Moraine, enjoy area before taking shuttle to Lake Louise
-Lake Louise to Agnes Tea house lake 1.5 hours to reach tea  house - cash only

Continue on to Big Beehive Hike and views of Lake Louise

-Head back down opposite side of mountain on Plain of Six Glaciers trail end up back at hotel (different scenery, gorgeous meadows)

-Lunch (expensive) or coffee at Fairmont Lake Louise to rest your feet before heading back to shuttle

-Head back Banff 4ish, shower, regroup, pack camelbacks for next day’s hikes
-Dinner @ Park Distillery. Great patio and ambiance
-Walk around downtown, try to have an early night

Sunday: Lake O’Hara & Icefields Parkway
-3:30am wake up call
-Lake O’Hara opabin plateau 13.6 miles round trip - try to catch shuttle back down
at 9:30 or 11:30
-Need to reserve shuttle tickets to trailhead 3 months in advance. We couldn’t get tickets so we walked 11km in from the parking lot before even reaching trailhead. Then trailhead gets very challenging towards top to Opabin Plateau
-1-877-RESERVE (1-877-737-3783) # to call about tickets / availability
- The walk in (if you cannot get a shuttle) is on a logging road through the forest. Uphill most of the way and a true pain in the arse. Views from plateau are unreal. We just did the one hike but the area around Lake Ohara has some incredible hikes to a variety of other alpine lakes.

-Drive The Icefields Parkway
-Your first stop along the Icefields Parkway is going to be Bow Lake. Easy lookout point

-Next stop: Peyto lake: less than two miles each way. Quick and easy hike for great pay off

-Next stop: The Big Bend is one of the most iconic sections of the Icefields Parkway. This is one of the most photographed viewpoints in Banff National Park.
-The last stop on your tour of the Icefields Parkway will be the Columbia Icefield. The Athabasca Glacier is one of the most famous glaciers in the world and the most visited glacier in North America.
-Back to downtown Banff for lunch at Una Pizza + Wine Banff. Amazing watermelon salad and fresh pizza

-Drive to Kananaskis for our next hotel: Pomeroy Kananaskis Village: amazing amenities, restaurants, Nordic spa, great for families, tons to do with kids. Great trails around the resort. Also a ski resort if you go in the winter
-Kananaskis is much quieter than Banff, more relaxing vibe, great hiking around the area, wish we had one more day to really explore Kananaskis and nearby hikes

Monday: Kananaskis
-Sleep in 6am
-Get coffee and light bite at Market Cafe in hotel
-We didn’t have enough of Banff yet so we spent our last full day there
-Breakfast Farm & Fire @ 10am

-Tunnel Mountain hike can walk from downtown Banff roughly 3 miles. Great view of the whole city and Bow River that flows through it

-Lunch downtown any patio can’t go wrong

-Art in Nature walk at Bow River, take a dip, walk the pathway towards the end of town on river side, then walk back through town

Pop into shops & restaurants - so many to get lost in
-Casual dinner @ Hankki for Korean street food

-Evening cap outdoor patio (coffee, drinks)
-Back to Kananaskis to enjoy our hotel & the grounds
-The end

In total, we hiked/walked roughly 45 miles in this time span.

Amazing pictures! Great trip report.

One of my favorite areas of the world. Did you get to go by Emerald Lake by chance?

Wow. Must be some really big crowds this season.

We stayed there in November years ago. Beautiful lake. Got to watch it ice over actually.

It was very busy. We screwed up by not realizing we needed to book the shuttle to O’hara 90 days in advance. Thank god we were able to catch a shuttle back to the parking lot. Another 7 miles walk back would have sucked

Thank you for the pics and itinerary. We will be spending 10 days between Canmore and Golden in September and this helps a lot.

We also have 5 days at Glacier NP in Montana..
