Athens- a day a the beach advice needed

I will be in Athens for a few days next week. Wife wants to go to a beach or a Greek Island. We originally were going to do Santorini, but that fell through.
Can anyone recommend beach or island that I should visit and still be back at my hotel room(Athens) that night?

Best I could do. I think most people get to the islands or further afield from Athens.
