And if you have a car you can also drive along the coast to Dyea. Not much left of the old town but we saw bears and salmon and it's a nice drive.
The snowslide cemetery is cool in Dyea, and we usually saw brown bear in the coastal sedges. Not many ruins left though. You can raft or kayak the river too. I really like Dyea because it's literally one Ridge from Skagway but is more like the coastal rainforest than Skagway.

We rented a car in Skagway and drove the pass so that's an option if the train trip doesn't fit your schedule. The road has mostly the same views as the train tracks. And if you have a car you can also drive along the coast to Dyea. Not much left of the old town but we saw bears and salmon and it's a nice drive.
Thanks for the suggestion

Another option might be to hook up with a local company. Dyea Dave does tours of Skagway (including the Cemetery and Reid falls) and other tours to Dyea and into the Yukon. If you get Dave, he's a wealth of information. He's got a couple of other drivers, can't vouch for them.

I had to stop for a day, too time consuming looking at all the options
I will get back into it later today/tomorrow on their sites but I haven't booked anything yet. I'll look into Dave as well, I really appreciate your suggestions. Depending on where we do the heli/dog will determine a lot for both Juneau and Skagway.
