I have Cox internet 50 mbps.

The install guy said the only place he could set it up was in the front room of my house.

It's a shotgun style house and it barely reaches my bedroom in the back.

What are my options to boost my wifi range?

What's the distance from the front of the house to the back? What wifi router do you have now? What's your budget? Your options are:

Replacing the router with something stronger or with a mesh system.
Running a cat6 cable to the back of the house or use a powerline adapter and connecting an access point.
Put a range extender in the middle of the house.

It's probably about 50 feet from the router to the back of the house.

I have the one that Cox gave me. I just bought a house but I wouldn't mind sinking about 200 bucks into something that would improve the range. The new house is bigger, but I should be able to have it more centrally located.

Running any new wires is out of the question. It's a rental and I'll only be there for a few more months.

I tried an outlet range extender and it barely improved the situation.

I tried that one and it isn't very effective. Don't those slow your speeds?

EDIT: Never mind. Just saw the line about running wire not being an option.

I'd check out a mesh router. Either the Linksys Veloop or the Netgear Orbi.

Either will provide blanketed WiFi coverage when you move to your new house.

Did you try a normal wifi extender or a powerline one.

Regular ones are garbage. I've got the 750 version of the one I posted, and it works like a dream on my 50 year old aluminum wiring.

I don't know the exact model of mine, but I paid about 50 bucks for it so its probably trash.

I will check out these and mesh routers.

Ideally it would be something that would be useful in my new house and get me by while I patiently wait for someone to bring fiber uptown

I just read about these. Thanks for the suggestion I'll probably go with one of those two.

Now my only concern is that it's cox being shoddy and not the router

What are the specs for your new house (area and layout)? Probably best to get a good recommendation for that house and it should work out where you are now.

This is for people more in the know than me. When is the next wifi standard expected to be released? Would it be best for the OP to spend a little now and wait for the next best thing to come out, or go ahead and get what's best for the next house now?

That's the same concern I have.

Current house is a duplex about 1000 sqft, the new one is 2100 sqft, 2 floors, and isn't as deep as the current house. I feel like I should buy something that covers the full range of my new house, if it's overkill atm, so be it.

I don't expect fiber to be available for at least 2 years. Theoretically 50 mbps should be plenty, but I have a lot of issues with it, probably because of Cox.
