I want to drop Dish but have some recordings on the DVR I do not want to lose. I copied them to a Dish external hard drive but can still only see them while played through a Dish DVR. Does anyone know a way to format the recordings t watch them without the DVR?

TIA

They are probably encoded so only the DVR can access them.

good question i also have a dvr apparently i 'bought' because dish sent me an ugly notice then reported me to the credit agencies

i am at a point in my life where i can afford to tell dish to frick off and their little ding on my credit will never hurt me.

Maybe you can use something like Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video Recorder from you tv out to record it from there instead of using the dvr.

Or use the dish anywhere app on your computer to play
your old recordings and use a software that records video from screen then save to external drive.
