Background; everything fed by coax
“Upgraded” to Contour
Nothing but issues, pixeling, freezing, etc
Cox send a guy out and he replaces with a set of wireless boxes, stopped the pixel freezing issue
Screen is dark ever since
Tried to reset to factory settings
Tried all brightness settings
Can’t find any setting on the Cox equipment
Any ideas or just buy a new one? Set is 10 years old

Is the Contour box connected via an HDMI cable?
That's my first guess, it's now connected via HDMI and you need to change a setting. Maybe an Energy Saving setting is on by default when you switched to HDMI.
I wouldn't mess with the brightness setting. Just keep that at it's default. Brightness is actually changing the brightness of the black levels.
