Spotify offline mode and VPN

Started a Spotify subscription to mainly download and listen to music in the car with android auto and listen while in the gym. I normally have a Protonmail VPN active on my android phone.
So, I downloaded several albums to listen to offline. To test I set the phone to airplane mode to force the app to play the music stored on the SD card on my phone and not stream. It wouldn't play.It appeared the app couldn't find the downloaded music.
Long Long story short with much swearing after I turned the VPN off the locally stored music played while not connected to the internet. Anyone else seen this ? Is it a known problem ? Why would locally stored music care if I had a VPN even while not internet connected ?
Any ideas ?

Found this, it was probably about where you were connected before you disconnected.

If you use VPN network and change the region, then you may get the Spotify downloaded playlists disappeared issue. That's because Spotify is not available for some countries and regions. So, to access your Spotify downloads, you should try to change your VPN network settings.
I would think you could simply make sure your VPN is showing the location in the US.

Thanks , will look into that. I was on a US based server but who knows how/what they are checking for..
Another thing I just remembered...within the Proton VPN there is what Proton calls "netshield". It's supposed to block trackers, ads etc. Maybe the app doesn't like Netshield so I'll turn it off and see what happens.. (even though local playback isn't using the VPN)

I just had it happen as well but there was an upgrade to the app between the times I used it offline. But I also use a VPN so who knows?

You can try using a music downloader to download Spotify songs to the USB drive. I have been using AMusicSoft Spotify Converter for several months. It helps me download Spotify music files for free! Intuitive and user-friendly. After the download is complete, you can enjoy your songs offline on multiple devices without a Spotify subscription. Recommend trying!

In fact, if you want to play locally stored Spotify music without being connected to the Internet, you may need to [link=(download the Spotify playlist)]https://www.tunesolo.com/spotify-music-converter/how-to-download-spotify-playlists-for-free.html[/link] locally in advance. This way you can listen to songs even if you don't have an internet connection.
