Safari on my iPhone is opening a new tab whenever I click a google link

This wasn’t happening before. I used to click a link and it would take me to the site.
Now, it opens the site in a new window and leaves the google search results in the previous window.
Tried changing settings and it isn’t working.

I guess you went to
Settings
Safari
General
Open Links>background
?
If so, go in same areas to clear history and website data
