I haven't had issues with roku, but my fire TV remote doesn't even last a week.
And the remote app is good and bad with that one. Times it won't connect and I have to unplug the fire TV and shut down the app then restart both.
Only option I've found is removing the batteries everytime.

Just adding a couple of more tips to this thread:
1. Buy a second remote, before you need one. The Ultimate remote with voice and headphone jack is almost always on backorder and you can only buy it from Roku. I'm having to wait 3 weeks for a replacement. The phone app works, but the kids can't use it on their devices.
2. They make silicone cases for the remote. It makes it look like a Wii-mote. You can find them on Amazon.com. It's cheap chinese crap, but it works. No more dropping and losing the battery cover. Bright colors make it easy to find.
