I pulled the Gen 1 Nest T-stats as soon as Google announced the buyout....(i hate being proven right EVERY time Google acquires stuff)
Should still be in the junk bin.... I've been meaning to check on the re-flashing projects to de-google them.

Mine came with the house and I just accepted my fate rather than get new ones.
NLE trades one cloud for another unless you use their self hosted app that has 10 work-in-progress warnings and almost no documentation. Not much discussion or updates lately but I guess that’s better than a hundred complaints.
For home assistant it might be easier to self host the backend rather than trying to get mqtt over authenticated https and then turn around and bridge that into your likely insecure broker.
Sucks they didn’t turn it into a polished product but I’ll give it a shot anyway at some point.
