Record/radio console project advice/experience

Little background:
I'm moving in about a month, and the new house will have office/retreat space for me (in theory). I love records and have a decent collection, but since marriage and children, I haven't been able to listen as much as I'd like.
Anywho, My mom's giving me her mom's old (inoperable?) record player/radio console. My plan is to gut it and retrofit it. Does anyone here have experience with this? I plan to loop it into my sonos system (currently only 2 One's and a playbar) Also, this is my lowly turntable. What's a reasonable price to spend on a better performance turntable? Since this will also be a piece of furniture, consideration will be given for appearance of the turntable. Any recommendations? Is there a difference in sound quality from a built-in pre-amp vs not?
Also, because I can't look in the console yet, I assume I'll have to get new speakers. Should I just get some off the shelf speakers and set them in the console, or should I buy a speaker kit and install it into the existing space?
Any advice is helpful. Also, if you just feel like effing with me, you're welcome to do that, too. Also, no pics of mom. though dad did die recently, so she's single (but old).

I'd love to see some pictures of the console and the space inside to add things. I have seen blog posts before on people who have taken them and updated them to include newer tech (like you would be by including a sonos connect)
Keep this post updated with the progress on it and good luck

Funny, I was thinking about doing this just a few days ago. Don't have much to offer, except this page that shows how someone else went about doing it.
If you end up going for it, post some pics

I saw that when I first decided to do this. It seems the most informative how-to I've seen. I think I'll probably do less cosmetic work to it. Maybe just some paint.

Got a bit excited for a moment, thought I might be able to advise regarding one of these critters...
