Question about HP printer ink

I have an HP Photosmart 6520 that I occasionally use. I have always used the HP ink and have never had any issues right out the package. Over the weekend I hooked up a new printer for my grandparents that used different cartridges. I took their 564 cartridges for my home printer but each time I tried to use them I kept getting an error message that they were fraudulent. They were all relatively new HP cartridges that had only been in the other printer for a week or so. Don't even think anything was printed during that time.
Anyone had this issue? Does the printer recognize that they've already been used in another printer or something and won't accept them?
