Original title and question: Has anyone used a third party modem with CenturyLink fiber internet?

Don't want to pay the monthly fee anymore.

TIA

Edit: After researching it looked like you don’t need a modem at all with fiber, just need a router with pppoe and vlan. Turns out that my Amplifi router does just that and I followed these directions after getting my username and password from CenturyLink.

One question if anyone knows. Every single site that I looked at said you HAD to have VLAN and set it to 201. But mine actually wouldn’t work at all but when I turned VLAN off, it worked like a charm. Anyone know why? Just curious.

Just happy I get to save a few bucks a month in uneccessary equipment rental fees!
