The license question is valid, what class? Basically two different radio types based on frequency and coverage, and depends on your license class.

Entry level Tech, you're probably looking for VHF/UHF FM, and Baofeng would probably be the best answer. Not as easy to program, but cheap as dirt. Local coverage and good for repeater use, although not as many people on the repeaters these days compared to years ago. The .835 repeater in St. Francisville has the most coverage if you're in BR.

Higher class licenses and you want to talk around the world? SSB and FM. Lots of entry level portable radios from Icom, Yaesu and Xeigu (MFJ). You could also go with some of the newer mobiles that are both VHF/UHF and HF.

So depends on your license and the coverage you're looking for. But a cheap chinese HT is a great start.

The Anytone 878 is a decent middle of the road HT that will also do DMR, has Bluetooth, and GPS. Their programming software is not all that bad either. With a 15.00 Nagoya antenna the have decent range too. Baofung will be the cheapest but if you get into it you will be looking for something a little better fairly quickly.

There are several repeaters in BR, you will have a hard time hitting the out of town ones with an HT. You may make the LP repeater since it’s way up there in the sky. You will however be able to listen to most in the area. Not much traffic, as said above, outside of drive time and weekly nets.

If you get one of the digital mode capable radios, you can get a hotspot for your house and talk all over the world. DMR seems to be the most popular around here. I don’t hear to much on D-Star and don’t have a Fusion radio.

The BR DMR and D-Star repeaters are currently not connected to the internet, a hot spot is the best in BR right now. There is a DMR repeater near the sunshine bridge that is fully functional but it may be to far for you HT to reach.

It’s a fun hobby but can get expensive quick.

There are tons of videos on YouTube with radio reviews, even reviews of the Chinese knock offs. Some are fairly decent radios, for what they are.

If you want to hit some farther away repeaters a mobile unit with 50 watts with the antenna in my attic gets me all the way out to the Jackson LA repeater, and the Gonzales repeater and anything in between.
