Pioneer AVIC-5200NEX Radio issues

I bought this radio over 15 months ago and am already having trouble with the functionality. I listen on iPod mode for the display, yet it keeps freezing. I'll have to restart my phone every time I plug it in, and it will sometimes just randomly show up as an error. Anyone else have similar issues?

Possibly a loose connection. I have an older Pioneer with iPod controls as well, but the USB ports are on the rear. The only connection from the front is an AUX cord slot. I bought a 10 foot USB extension and then a short apple cable to connect with from there. Sometimes the apple cable comes loose and I have to remove it and insert it again. Also, it seems they work better with actual ipods than with an ipod touch or iphone.
It could also be that the device wasn't connected when you started your car. If I'm using the cord, I make sure to plug it in before cranking the car. If I start it up and then plug in, I sometimes get the error message. I noticed this when I got a call one day. I took it off the cord to answer the call, and when I plugged it back in, the Pioneer wouldn't recognize it. Honestly, I just use Bluetooth most of the time. If I had a touchscreen like yours I might plug in more, but mine is the old dial and buttons and it is much easier to control from the phone.

I got it installed at Mike's Audio in Baton Rouge in December 2016. It is synced up through the Sync USB port beneath the radio. They ran an update and believe it is a manufacturer glitch. Turning my phone off and on does not fix the problem; neither does restoring the factory settings. The radio plays the audio fine, but the iPod screen is the main reason I bought the radio.
