So it doesn't autoupdate the hub when you get it connected?
No, but I'm unable to get either of my bulbs to connect and it says that an update is required at the bottom of the hub page.
Not sure if I should update and hope the exploit will still work or wait (which is gonna be really hard)?

You need to go ahead and update the hub. The SQL injection will still allow it to be rooted so you don't have to worry you can't do it later.

ok dumb question but what does rooting the hub allow you to do?
Posted on 12/10/14 at 8:17 pm to nino2469
Wink routes all commands through new York. Rooting allows you to issue commands directly to your local hub without the cloud bullshite.

so then it only works if you are on your home network or does it still allow remote access for things like the door locks if I want to let someone in my house.

Awesome, I wasn't sure.

Well.,..frick. That didn't take long. It appears the wink developers are watching us.
Eta this means don't allow your hub to auto update. To add devices you'll have to temporarily roll back to the older app. Too bad I already did this

OK here's my latest update on wink.
I have 3 hubs; 1 rooted, 1 normal running latest firmware and 1 virgin.
So far the 'normal' hub has been completely flawless. Took maybe 30 seconds to pair with my schlage touchscreen deadbolt.
Not a single glitch so far that I've seen.
I like having robots notify me every time someone changes the thermostat or opens and closes the garage or front door
:thatsfrickingcreepy:
The one odd issue is I have set up user profiles for my 2 older kids and my spouse.. The kids only get access to lights and front door lock and my wife gets access to thermostats too.
Another cool robot I would like to set up is to automatically lock the front door and close the garage at 10pm every night because there are 6 people in my house and shite gets left open all the time.
No worse feeling than getting up in the morning and finding your garage door wide open.
The geofencing works with my deadbolt! It will unlock as I arrive home automatically and lock automatically when I leave.
However the Chamberlain garage door opener widget won't allow me to add user access or work with geofencing so I'm going to call wink today to find out if this is a bug or by design.
They originally said security locks like garage door couldn't be activated by proximity but I just did that with my deadbolt so someone is a damn liar.
So far 2 thumbs up.. I've seen no issues like the amazon reviews.
Eta it appears you can't trigger a robot based on time of day yet so scratch the cool idea about locking the house up at night for the moment.

ok i got more answers:
1. wink schedules are within products (like lights, thermostats, etc.) so you would have to add the notification/behavior there. however, they dont have schedules for the deadbolts or garage door opener. retarded.
solution? do something even more retarded like 'turn on light at 10pm' and then create a robot that says 'if light comes on between 930 and 1030 then shut garage door and lock deadbolts'.
i went on and on with them about his this needs to be added and he said 'no plans to add time-based events but we'll take your input into consideration' Oh yeah. right. i'm holding my breath.
at least there's a workaround.
2. regarding not being able to 'permission' the garage door product to another user..? simple, just add it on that user's wink account using your credentials. a bit of a hack but it works good enough.
3. he noted the android wear bug of shortcuts not sync-ing properly and said they would let me know when that was fixed and would add me to the 'beta test' for updates to the wear feature

So I went to connect my wink Hub and it tells me I have a WEP network....
How do I change that???

Go into your router and change security to WPA
Eta you need to do that anyway.. WEP is shite security

time for a *BUMP*
1. I no longer feel that there's much advantage to rooting a WINK at this time due to the difficulties in maintaining root and the new updates being pushed by Quirky. My rooted hub sits unused while a non-rooted one is doing all the work.
2. The WINK hub (esp for 99 cents) has done fantastic. I don't think I've had an outage yet..unless you count my geofencing trigger not going off when I arrived home one time and failing to unlock the door automatically (first world problems) which I chalked up to the fact I have a data "hole" at the entrance to my subdivision and sometimes the phone doesn't pick the data signal back up before I arrive at my house. Since its only happened once, I'm not sure who's the blame.
3. So far all the devices I've added are working great together. Once I add the smoke detectors I'll have more to go on.
4. I'll continue to add devices just for the 'what can it do' factor alone becauase they're so cheap..I have nothing left to add on the list I don't think that's over $50 so why not?
5. It may make sense for me to start a new thread where each post is simply a review of a given automation doo-dad so they're all in one place rather than scattering the info all over the home automation thread or something.
6. Please let me konw what you'd like me to buy & add to the system.
So far I have:
- WINK HUB
- 2 Honeywell thermostats
- Chamberlain Garage Opener
- 2 GE LINK bulbs
- Schlage Deadbolt
Soon to buy:
- Lutron switches
- Multi-purpose sensor (humidity, motion, etc.)
- Smoke/Fire/CO2 detectors
- Automatic blinds?? (no idea about cost here)
- Philips HUE color changing bulbs
- Philips "Friends of HUE" LED lightstrip
- Window/door sensors
- "Smart" outlet
I sure wish WINK would support Foscam cameras. The API is completely open as you can see by the dozens of android and ios apps that support it. I cannot abide a monthly charge for that stupid dropcam when I have a much more full-featured HD camera already that is easy to work with.

Those lightstrips (and all of the HUE stuff) look pretty sweet but I want you to test the smoke/etc. detectors to see if they're capable of having a sensor (motion/door/etc.) push a command to set the alarms off.

Great. So I guess NOW I can take my hub out of the box and start using it?
I have those two bulbs, but I have not a single light fixture in my home that uses that style.

i'm with you..i just ended up getting 2 lamps out and putting one downstairs in the foyer and one upstairs in the baby room.
a cool feature i just discovered is you can set the dimming level (those GE bulbs are pretty bright) and when you set it to go on and off later, it remembers that level.
i'm guessing they would make most sense in a home theater room where you want to set the lighting automatically or something.

yeah buddy. this thing cost a buck. worst case scenario the rooting suddenly reveals something AMAZING and you just take yours back to home depot and exchange for a new one to root.
i'd seriously keep my eye out for future $1 sales (i missed one the other day that didnt require you to buy anything else to get that price!) to buy a backup just for rooting fun if i were you. why not? you spend more money on plastic knives at the dollar store.

you won't start to enjoy this IMO until you add a few other doodads like door locks or thermostats as well. I just noticed a feature I had missed the other day..the activity log on the app *ALSO* shows you who triggered the event! how nice is that? (see below) now i not only know my door unlocked but which family member unlocked it (whited out areas below)

If you see another sale like that let us know. I'm thinking with the new Honeywell thermostat and a couple of wink capable switches I can get my electricity bill under $70
