No sound with dual monitors

When I plug in my second monitor using an HDMI cord I lose sound all together 90% of the time and it does not come back for awhile. I have tried going into the control panel and adjusting the speakers back to my laptop as default and this works occasionally. I have even tried using external speakers plugged into the laptop but that seemed to make it worse.
Will a docking station solve this issue for me or is there a simpler solution? The ones I’m seeing on Amazon are about $80 so I don’t want to spend the money if I don’t have to.

Do you monitors have a speaker? You may try a cheap speaker you can get them for like $10-20.

My secondary monitor doesn’t have a spot to plug in speakers, only a HDMI cord. I have external speakers that I plug into my laptop. I’m curious if running everything through a docking station might work best.

DOes the monitors have speakers built in though? If so the PC may be trying to feed audio to the monitor via the HDMI CABLE
