Newest version of Chrome mobile app opening closed tab on relaunch

Over the weekend my Pixel 5 downloaded a new version of Chrome.
In the past, when I was surfing, I could close the tab(s) I had open and then close Chrome (swipe up to close it, not just minimize/send to background), and when I relaunched it later in the day or the next day, it would launch a clean browser with no tabs.
Now, when I relaunch, it opens the last tab/site/page I was looking at before I closed out, even though I have closed that tab before exiting the browser.
The only way around it is to close the tab I am looking at, open an incognito tab, close it, and then close the browser.
Bug? Settings change?
