For in-person school they are wanting kids to bring devices, the school will issue Chromebooks, but they are pretty crappy.
Nothing crazy, most work is cloud based.

Same boat here but we’re doing virtual learning. They gave us chrome books to use at home. Daughter has hers hooked to a monitor and is using a mouse and keyboard with it and it seems to work much better than the crappy touchpad on the chrome book.
We found an iPad on sale and bought that to use at home. My wife was tired of our 1st grader using her nice MacBook Air to do his work on. With a decent case and a Bluetooth keyboard it has worked pretty well this week. For some reason the black 32GB WiFi version was on sale for $280 while the others were still around $340.

Chromebook and it isn’t close. Only needs wifi. Nothing to install to slow it down. Cheap. Hook to a monitor and external keyboard and it’s all they could need. Google docs or office 365 all work in the cloud. Spend >$250 and thank me later

What would you consider cheap?
There are plenty of options out there but for a comparable price, a chromebook is going to be the way to go. Any Windows machine in the same price range of a chromebook is going to be painfully slow and almost unusable.

Hooking to a monitor is key. We bought a bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo, and hooked my daughter's to a nice monitor I bought for my wife that she rarely used. Having the mouse and keyboard is almost like having a laptop with a docking station. It moves much faster than using the built in touchpad. But that might not help when they're using it at school. Which is why I recommended an iPad. You can easily carry an iPad and a small bluetooth keyboard in a backpack and set it up like a small laptop at school.

I don’t find the iPad a viable replacement for a pc. I use one, but never for anything school or professional. I have used a chromebook as a laptop replacement with little to no drop off.
I don’t either but if all the learning is through the cloud, using Google classroom, etc, then an iPad is great. With a keyboard it makes it simple.

I purchased an SSD for my MacBook and it runs all of their programs like a champ.
I actually have a 2020 all-in-one PC that wouldn't run the virtual tour yesterday for their orientation, and they came in the living room and tried the 2012 MacBook with SSD and it ran with no issue

I bought an Acer Aspire back in March when everything went virtual and have been happy with it. My kids are in kindergarten and 2nd grade and use it.

I bought a HP basic laptop at Walmart 3 years ago and it has been excellent for what I do, I'm typing on it now:) Windows 10, Storage 1 T, 2 gig ram, hard disk, HD. Got it for $400 right before they moved the model to make way for latest, about 2 year cycle I think.
