Our administrative assistant at work just informed me she is going to be taking classes soon and needs a laptop for it. Sounds like some classes will be online too. Sounds like the laptop will only be needed for internet, office, and maybe running the program for web based class (unless that is done in the internet browser).

Do you have any recommendations for a budget computer that will work for her? Or at least what specs she should be mindful of? I'm thinking she should need 100-250gb of hard drive, and that the processor might not be a big issue (could be wrong).

Can you download software (like Microsoft Office) on a Chromebook or just apps from the App Store?

Nope, but you can use Office Online or Google Docs to accomplish the same things.

I am just not sure how comfortable she is with using Google Docs. Plus Office online costs a lot. Through work we can get Office stand alone for $10 so she wouldn't have to pay monthly Office cloud prices.

If the machine is only going to be used for web browsing and M$ Office, then pick ANY major brand laptop with a MSRP of $399 or higher. They are all about the same, and anything cheaper than $399 is most likely a complete POS.
Avoid touchscreen or 2 in 1 devices at that price point - again probably a POS.

Best bang for buck will actually be an off-lease or manufacture refurb of a business line laptop (think Dell Latitude). Business line refurbs were usually well taken care of in an office environment and you can get a significantly better machine for the money.

If google docs is a viable option then I agree with the Chromebook suggestion. Its literally tailor made for that situation.

And see if you can find one of those on sale. We bought a Toshiba laptop years ago that we got great use out of. It was around $600, widescreen, full keyboard with number pad, etc. 4 years later we bought an HP on sale for $330 that blew it away in performance.

Thanks for the suggestions ... I'm not sure the budget she's on but I will be certain to pass down all advice.
