My old iPhone 5 was damaged and I now have a new iPhone 5. Can I just take the sim card out of the old phone and put it in the new phone? If I do this, will I still have to go to the ATT store and have the new phone activated?

If it's an ATT iphone then you can simply swap sim cards and be fine using it.
ETA: ATT iphone 5 should be model A1428.

Actually, it is an apple iphone 5. So swapping the sim card will essentially activate the phone?
Thanks
Thanks

Apple has two versions of the iphone 5, a1428(GSM) and a1429(CDMA); ATT uses a GSM network. To answer your question, you do not need to activate your phone to use it, simply pop in your old sim card from the broken device to your new phone and use it.
ETA: If your new device is a1429(CDMA), you'll still be able to use voice/text on ATT network but I believe you won't get LTE speed for data.
