HP Chromebook for work/school and having issues running programs and Office applications

So the wife recently got an HP Chromebook for work and school and is having issues running PowerPoint and applications needed for school, taking test etc.
Are Chromebooks different from regular computers on what can be ran on them?
She is currently having to use my laptop for her schoolwork, not wanting to buy another laptop seeing as the new Chromebook was purchased for this purpose.
TIA

Let me explain this like you’re 5:
Chromebooks are running chrome OS which means you are basically able to do only things that can be done on the internet browser. This means no installing applications like Microsoft office.
Now the good news:
Microsoft has 365 which is completely online versions of their software. Besides that, the chrome book works with your google account. Google docs, slides etc can be used as a replacement to create documents and presentations and then downloaded as their Microsoft counterpart in the click of a button. Or you can use them as is cause they are freaking fantastic for collaboration.
Long story short…she needs a tutorial cause it’s more than enough for what she is doing.
ETA: unless she has to use some high powered statistical software or autocad for school, this will work fine. Even the new test security features can be used on chromebooks now.
ETA2: if she is in college, then the school most likely has free licenses for office 365 for students. Again, these are cloud based and can be used just like to desktop versions on a chromebook.

Can you explain how to convert PPSX to a PPTX file on the Chromebook?

PPSX open with PowerPoint as a presentation only. PPTX are regular editable PowerPoint files. So you open both with ppt.
LINK /
Link explains how to convert. Follow steps in PowerPoint office 365 online.
I’ve never tried a ppsx file but throw it in your google drive, right click and open with google slides may work too.
