Man I wish I had the knowledge to do that type of stuff. I work in software development...but I don't develop the software . I'll be using out of the box stuff mostly, but I'm excited to get started. Just waiting to move into the house in a couple of weeks.

what is the best option for just lights? I feel like $99 is overkill if I just want to control lights.

Wink is the cheapest/easiest option right now but the bulbs, etc all work with just about any smart hub.
At the moment I have:
- 2 Honeywell WiFi thermostats
- 10 door trippers
- 3 smart dimmer switches (3 different brands)
- several Kidde smoke/CO2 detectors
- 1 schlage lock
- 1 cree connected bulb
- 8 GE connected bulbs
- 1 chamberlain garage door opener
- 2 wink hubs (I have a long house)

I'm in a condo so it won't take much. what's the advantage of the connected light switches?

Depends on how creative you're feeling. Use the geofencing feature to turn your lights on when you come home and schedule them to turn off at 11pm or something.
I just had a brainstorm. Set one tripper up to also turn in the globe post light in my backyard when I open the patio door if it's night.
I also just stuck a tripper on my attic door and that also turns the attic light on automatically rather than having to climb up and pull the chain on it.
I then have robots to turn them off after 30 minutes.

Picked up a nest 3rd gen this weekend and pulled the trigger on the smartthings home monitoring kit tonight. This should keep me entertained for a few days.
