Google Photos help --- 10 years worth of video all shows the same day when imported

For some reason the videos I shot on my Canon didn't import into google photos with the date stamp intact. the photos did, but not videos.

interesting thing is, the photos and videos were properly setup in picasa. it wasn't until moving them to google photos that the videos all ended up showing the same day..which is a mess.

So i'm trying to make google photos my preferred record (RIP picasa) but its been difficult to properly divide my photos.

i can create albums, sure, but it seems the photos i've selected still show along with all the others when i go back to create another album so its very difficult to ensure i've properly tagged all of them.

anyone had this issue? how can i get google to stop displaying all the videos every time i want to group some subset? if it would simply remove them from that date, it would be far far easier to break them up.

at this point i cant even tell if i've put the same video into more than one album because the default view doesn't show me that its already been grouped.
