Gizmo or better option?

My 7 year old plays with several friends in our neighborhood and I'd like someway to be able to communicate or at least know who's house she is at. We have walkie talkies, but the batteries burn out constantly and it's kind of a pain.
We are on ATT, but I am considering opening a VZW account just for a Gizmo watch for her. Are there any other options that are worth exploring? I thought of buying a pre-owned apple watch - but they seem to fragile and I don't really want her distracted by it and spending too much time on it.
Any other recommendations?
