i used Asus for YEARS and their wired backhaul 'firmware flash' to the legendary 56 and 88 routers but it was just a constant headache and things breaking; trying tomato firmware yada yada.
I played the upgrade the router to Tomato with Asus, Linksys, Netgear etc for many years. The problem with consumer all in routers is that something eventually breaks. It's 3 devices in one (router/switch/access point) in the smallest package possible with all that heat. Then you have all the complexity of 1 firmware that drives all of it.
I don't think one of those "wifi routers" I had go more than 2 or 3 years without some issue. That's the main reason I went to Ubiquiti and UniFi with separate components. I've been running the same router, switch and 5x access points for almost 7 years now without any issues. I'm sure something will eventually break which is fine but then I'll just replace that piece.
I bought my mom a UniFi dream machine (their all in one product) 6 years ago and it's still going strong too.
Fyi, all 2nd gen UniFi APs and newer support wireless backhaul so you can do mesh with them as well. I don't think you even need UniFi router for that just the APs.
