My parents are getting emails on both their cox email accounts from their friends/family except the name is usually one letter off....so if a real contact email is john.smith@gmail.com they might get an email from john.smiht@gmail.com

They apparently are getting them all the time now. Is there a way to stop this? How do the spammers get their contact's info?

Looking to fix it for them. Not sure what the deal is and couldn't find a good answer on google.

TIA!

Usually it means they were compromised at one point and the address book was downloaded. It could also mean one of their friends were compromised and their address book was downloaded. Not much you can do to stop phishing other than user awareness training and a good filter, which is not really available on gmail.
