Difference between DD5.1/DTS and Dolby TrueHD/DTS-MA

I'm curious to know from those who have done a side by side comparison how improved the audio soundtracks are on movies with the Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats compared to the older/compressed DD5.1/DTS formats.
I'm looking to upgrade my receiver or add a processor and use my current receiver simply as an amplifier but want to make sure this is worth the expense.

In my opinion, I'd wait until I needed to upgrade instead of upgrading for the sake of getting DTHD/DTSMA. To me, it seems to have a better low end, but other than that, I can't tell a huge difference. But then again, I have partial hearing loss in one ear, so....
