I need help and/or direction with creating a cross-referenced database.

Currently, a customer brings in a part # and/or description and we spend 20-30 minutes looking through physical line cards for the cross-reference formula.

All of the data is available, but on physical line cards.

We would like to have a searchable database whereby the part# or description can be entered and the cross-reference formula be immediately available.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Yep that's what you have to pay for if you don't know how to do it.

I'm ok with paying for it. Either the software or someone to write a program for us

Can't really recommend software but I work with databases for a living/developing them on Oracle-based and iSeries systems.

There's lots of stuff out there to suit simpler needs.

How much data are we talking about? Can you describe or post a pic of these cards?

I may have some free time. Email me at my username at Gmail if you want me to work up a proposal.

Others will have better solutions I'm sure and if it's more than like 100 cards this would probably take too much time. However, if each physical card's information is typed up and legible than you could do something like scan the cards, convert to a PDF, OCR the PDFs and then convert to excel to create your searchable database. You could also take pictures of each card and convert those to PDFs if the cards are not scannable. Just spitballing here.

The program Foxit PDF will let you download a free trial version and it has OCR capabilities and can convert to excel.
