what would be really cool if there was an app that showed the various strengths of all 46 channels on your phone as you sit on the roof and change the direction of the antenna in real time.
it would be good, but you would need a tuner for every channel you could receive.

i know its roughly facing the right direction from the antennaweb page but i'm also 100% sure it could be more precise if i knew how to do it.
i have 2 apps on my phone i could use to set the antenna direction. "GSP Status" has a built in compass. Or use "Dioptra" it uses your phone camera with a HUD. So it'll make it easier to align with the antenna and get the direction accurate.

I used the winegard app to do the same thing.

Don't do it. You'll wake up in a hotel bathtub with both of your kidneys missing. ?

Winegard app was useless. Too many hills and trees around my house, it wouldn't even show a tv station.
Playing around with diaptra now. Only problem is it doesn't tell me where the signal is. I'll have to look that up online I guess.

Hey CAD, are you running Tautulli, formerly Plexpy?
I would recommend it if you have multiple accounts using your server. It will give you stats, and tell you inf you have files that are being trans coded when you know they shouldnt be. you can either encode them to a different format or get your client to changes its settings.

Did you hit the AR+ button in the top right?

yes. and i tried getting on my roof as well as street level.
what happens is i get a red dot with arrows on the edges.
as i move it around i *may* get a sniff of the white station placard at the very edge of the screen but no matter what i cant get it to actually move to the middle. it starts to move then jumps away. i cant even get enough of it onto the screen to see which call letters of the station it is.
the screenshots make it look like the station is supposed to appear and you move the phone until its centered in the red circle.
but my situation is unique. i'm in a valley, my house is halfway up a hill..and have several thousand trees which tower above me in the direction i know the stations are in.
so i can only get a 'sniff' of the horizon..but i would think this should be able to find the signal regardless since the antenna is doing it.
i've also tried the hdhomerun signal meter app but i have no idea what its telling me other than all the little bars are full green so i guess thats good.
then i tried 'antenna pointer' which kinda worked although the green 'V' indicating signal direction and azimouth was never consistent. it would vary as much as 15-20% degrees as i moved around with my phone.
and yes this is all outdoors.
eta maybe this will help. the signal should be coming from the direction of the arrow. you can see my antenna mounted on an eave in the middle of my roof. to the left is nothing but more trees.
BEHIND my house is the hill its built into but luckily the main signals aren't coming from that direction. the ridge runs parallel to the street at the back of my house for several miles.

i tried winegard in 3 locations
* roof beside antenna
* top of my driveway
* down at the road (where this pic was taken)

but those blinds tho.......
follow a walk through for plexpy, you have to run it in python, i had no clue how to do it but got it working following a walkthrough.
And i want to know how to apply new libraries to all users rather then having to go in and click it in each users profile.

ok so maybe this will help.
antennaweb says most signals are 26 degrees. not sure what 'true' vs 'magn' means on the tvfool chart above.
the dioptra app seems to do a good job of getting my azimuth on my phone as i move it around.
so is it safe to say i should just get on the roof and get my phone to point to 26 degrees and be done with it? can i safely ignore the 'true'?
here's a dioptra screengrab. it shifted to 27 as i was trying to get it to take a pic but since i cant affect anything but the 360 degrees, it sounds like i just face my antenna in this direction.

you map is easy. Magnetic north eis what a compas shows, true north is north on a map. they are slightly different at all times.

so am i correct in saying i should use the 26 degrees shown on the dioptra app as the direction to go with? (see screenshot above)
eta what i'm saying is i'm not clear if that app is displaying 'true' or 'magnetic'. i don't want to have to adjust the antenna twice.

yea if you are using a compass, go magnetic.
why have you ignored what im telling you about using a tv and its tuner?

i cant really get the coax to the tv. it was long enough to go from my roof to where the hdhomerun box is but its not feasible to get it to a TV without adding an adapter and more coax.

The Dioptra app should be displaying magnetic north as it uses the earth magnetic field to get it's orientation.
