Apple Watch - Won't Vibrate on Texts

I see a couple of threads about Apple watches so I'll change the topic without derailing someone else's thread.
Got an Apple Watch Series 4 for Christmas.
I got everything set up but for some reason it will not alert, ring, or vibrate on text messages. It is receiving the messages on the watch but just not alerting me.
It works, rings, and vibrates fine on incoming calls.
I have combed the internet and tried several different things to figure it out but nothing has worked so far.
If you Google my issue I have probably tried the top 4-5 results.
The software is up to date.
Any ideas from the great minds of the tech board?

And make sure your do not disturb is not on. Scroll up from the watch home screen and make sure the moon icon is not blue.

Thank you for the responses...
As I was driving home yesterday my wife sent me a text and the dang watch vibrated and alerted me. I didn't change anything or do anything different. Maybe it's like the delayed typing in messages right now.

If you have your phone unlocked - the watch won't vibrate, ding or alert you.
Since you have the iPhone open - no sense in alerting you because you are looking at the phone.
I had a friend who was having that issue on Christmas Day too.
