Any iTunes / iPod Touch Experts Around?

There are several songs on my iPod Touch in which the song titles are in light gray instead of black, and there's a dotted circle to the left of each title.
Using the app on my Windows based computer, I'm unable to get these songs to download, or to erase from my device. Does anyone have any hints or tips I can use?
