Is your dev team and systems team the same group?
Does management balk at spending money on sending them to conferences and training? If you have a dev team one step behind thats often the case.
Is your system web based on client server?
Different groups
This is behind a veil for me. I am on the sales side of things and dev and system dev is hidden behind a bubble in tucson. That is why I am trying to bring them what we are facing in the field. We are reactive and not proactive. My company doesn't skimp on investing, so I feel that it may be the management of those groups that my be the issue.
Client server

But if they are regulated by government bodies it changes as well.
This is the issue. FDA is incredibly stringent. These algorithm's are giving a diagnosis and also suggesting what treatment should be used. To make sure there is no gray area, they have you submit a "system" which incorporates all pieces involved to come up with that result. Without going down a long road of what my stuff does, this utilizes multiple systems/instruments that are each dependent on their own FDA approval. If one of those chains is not in place then it affects a lot.
Just a word of warning for you IT guys in other industries. This is something that all healthcare IT deals with, my company is not alone. If this "non-industry standard" approach makes you cringe, make sure you think through any job offers at a hospital etc.

I feel your pain. I work for a medical device company. It has giving me a new perspective on things as far as why medical equipment is so expensive. The FDA is a HUGE part of why medical things lag behind, if something is working the customer does not want to change it as it costs them lots of money to validate everything. That being said, you should take what is said on this board with a grain of salt. Medical systems should follow the recommendations of the FDA. We hire cybersecurity consultants that specialize in medical equipment. I suggest that you do the same. I do not know the details of your product(s) but I would start here LINK (it is about medical devices but you may still find the information useful). Also, other useful information may be to check out IEC 62304 for development of medical software.

I felt like a pariah bringing the old architecture in here
Glad someone else understands that it actually isn't dragging feet as much as it is the incredibly difficult process it entails. I appreciate the link. I do deal with medical devices so this is pertinent. My main objective is to push dev to be developing with the most up to date standards in mind even if they are not the "requirement".

I know what you mean. We have a device that is still operational in labs and hospitals today that was first put on the market in 1972. The customers are refusing to change even though we bought the worlds supply of parts for that machine 10 years ago and we only have about a 2 year supply left. Knowing that information, they are still hesitant to change and are willing to run the machine until it dies before switching. And mind you, the replacement device was released 15 years ago. All of our current development is using the latest technologies and standards the exceed the FDA requirements.

I was in the Denver VA lab not too long ago.
