Why is the tiebraker goal differential and not total goals scored?

Just seems like it so clearly provides an incentive to play for ties or for 1-0 losses.

Goals scored is used later down the line in the tie-break rules. Don't know why other than Fifa says so?

Because the measure of a team is how you play both offensively AND defensively.

well if you lose 1-0 then youre at -1

if you tie then youre back at 0

when you win you go to +1 +2 +3 etc...

you obviously get a better goal differential by winning games

because you could score 42 goals and lose all your games.

differential is the only way to account for losing 43-42.

I suppose the idea is that goal differential rewards teams that are good offensively and defensively.

no its the way to seperate winners of the greatest margin. First it is decided on points and then if each team has the same amount of points if you beat the 3 teams more soundly than the team that is tied with you, you should move on because with the same results you did better. understand?
