Why do Captains wear the armband?

the captain's armband designates who will be the first to charge at the ref in a series of yelling protests, gestures, and disgusted facial contortions

further its easy peasy to take it off the arm of the previous captain if he gets chopped down by a crap tackle....

captains get more leeway talking to the ref before getting carded

similar to "c" on hockey player jerseys, except if a captain gets subbred out or sent off, he gives the band to someone else on the field, that person is your mouthpiece to the ref. unlike baseball where the coach can run out on the field to argue a call, the captian does this in soccer.

Technically, the captain is the only one that's supposed to talk to the ref.

I understand that most sports mark the captain in some way. But captains usually don't have any special rights in football, basketball, etc.

Just trying to figure out if it's the same for soccer.

They're supposed to be the ones who talk to the ref, and they meet before the game with the other captain and the ref.
