Wayne Rooney retires from playing in order to focus on managerial role; Rooney is Man Utd and England's record goalscorer; Current and prospective owners Mel Morris and Sheikh Khaled impressed with 35-year-old's record; Derby 22nd in the Championship and face Rotherham in their next game

One of the best of a generation hangs em up

Seems like all the legends from the 2000s are about done

Thats not gonna be a good start to manager career.. Derby didnt invest at all in the squad that barely missed out on promotion last season ... Hope they can turn it around

Geniunely a spectacular player. Could literally play anywhere, and did for the team to the detriment of his goal tally. The seasons he played as a striker, in 09/10 and 11/12, he produced goal tallies of elite strikers. The seasons he played behind a strike partner or out wide, he was equally as superb.

There is one game that absolutely no one remembers, but it was a game for England against Croatia in 2008. Theo Walcott scored 3 goals, but the player of that match was Wayne Rooney, who started out in the No. 10 role behind Emile Heskey. He was utterly fantastic in that role, and convinced me that he could have been one of the best playmakers of his generation had he played in the hole his whole career.

He has to be regarded as one of the top ten players of that generation. Behind Messi and Ronaldo, but closer to them than some of the other players.

There was that four year stretch he was arguably the best player in the world it just happened to be when Messi and CR7 were getting ready to peak

Difference is those two held that peak

Rooney playing CM def effected his numbers for a few years but even then he was very good in that roll
