Looks like that false 9 really worked out

I'm not sure if it's just Rom coming into his own finally, or if Mourinho has had the same kind of effect like Pep had on Sterling, but he has turned into a complete player.
Great timing Rom. Thanks.

Messi should have let Kun and Dybala play more.

Outside of not knowing what to do with Messi, the insistence of Argentina to continue to play an aging Mascherano really killed them. If you have to play him, play him in place of one of the awful center-halves, where his aging won’t hurt you as much. That would also free you to play someone like Lo Celso in midfield.

A thing I noticed today was fullback play. Usually fullback play is super important, but we haven't seen very much great fullback play. Teams seem to want to keep their fullbacks from going too far upfield. That said, Laxalt had a great game for Uruguay, and he's not a natural LB. In terms of defensive performances, it was really good. In contrast, Guerrero had plenty of room to get forward and couldn't produce a pass, though he offered some dangerous balls that were cleared. Pavard for France, even outside of the goal, provided better fullback play than most we've seen this tournament.

Cavani was basically playing fullback for 20mins or so
dude was working his socks off

If they insisted on playing three at the back, Masch could have been a player to bring the ball out, in the middle of a back three, with Lo Celso and Banega or Perez in front of the back three.
I don't think any FA deserves as much blame as Argentina's, as they've wasted two WC with really poor choices as manager.

They brought in a manager they thought, bc he did more with less. That he would be great when loaded with talent.
His tactics and player selection with an abundance of talent where just all over the place.

Haven't been a soccer fan and have tried to give it another shot for the WC. I detest it more than ever. I've never seen so many flops and fakes as I have in this WC.
I watched a guy from Africa roll on the ground repeatedly. He must have tumbled five times. He fell once but tumbled five times. The worst part is when they fake this stuff and it doesn't get called yet they insist on continuing to fake the injury so they essentially make their team play a man down until they decide to man up and get on their feet.
And it appears this is the only real tactic they have. Feign injury so they can get a rest or get a kick or some sort of free attack. How is this not penalized?

France starting to look like we all thought they could be. Very potent side. Deschamps must know something we don't, as I'm still not seeing him as more than the guy with the best seat in the stadium.

Quarterbacks are almost untouchable in the NFL, baseball pitchers throw at hitters for walking across the mound after an out and flopping in the NBA is 100x worse than it is in soccer.
There is pussy shite in every sport. You just have some vendetta against soccer. It’s okay to admit it.

It sucks that it turned you off. The international game is in general worse than the best club teams. The flopping is part of the game, but I barely notice it now unless it's blatant. A lot of it is just embellishing contact so as to make sure the ref blows a whistle, while some of it is straight deception. There are lots of reasons it happens but the basic reason is that referees have wildly different interpretations of what constitutes a foul, so players embellish to ensure a whistle. Outside of that, the game is very similar to other football codes, where field position and turnovers are of paramount importance. Fouls can be a way of moving a team up the field, but the refereeing in general has been better this tournament than other iterations.

On to today's first match
I think we will see the best performance yet from Spain. We have already seen what a somewhat technical side can do to Russia.
Spain will most likely use Russia being amped up playing in front of the home crowd to their advantage. Russia will be running around like mad men and Spain will for all intensive purposes play keep away with tons of triangle passing between each other. Eventually wearing the Russians down and then pick them apart. It will be a slow death by a thousand cuts.

So Spain completed well over a 1000 passes, wore Russia down but didn't show any willingness to attack until the 2nd half of ET.
They literally followed their game plan to the T, but deiced to not even bother in the final third
The decision to leave Koke out there for the entire match was baffling.
The complete misuse of Asensio was frustrating to watch.

Yeah for some reason Koke played as a right back in the offensive third. They should have tried to get Isco and Asensio isolated in the wings and let them dribble. Spain needed a real winger all tournament.

The Spanish press has dubbed this Selección as playing 'gilitaka'. LOL
