Somebody help me understand goalie gloves...

Why are the fingers so wide and bulky? I would think this would make your hands clumsy. What advantage do those gloves bring over, say, a wide receiver glove that allows for a lot of precision feeling?

that shite would hurt so bad if you wore WR gloves, and they are decently bulky but it's not like youre trying to write with a pencil or anything so it's not really that big of a deal

not exactly sure or being a smartass. But if you have an Ibrahimovic volley flying at you the padding may help considerably.

A soccer ball isn't exactly fluffy, and it's usually coming at you relatively quickly.

So it is for the padding. Got it. I am not being a smartass. Just have watched very little soccer. I have learned enjoy the sport though.
ETA: So how fast is a soccer ball moving when it is struck by a pro player? Footballs are going like 65 MPH, at best.

I think Cristiano Ronaldo can strike a ball around 65 MPH.

Upon further research, Wiki answers say guys like Peyton Manning and Vick throw the football about 40-45 MPH. However, other sites say NFL QBs can throw into the 60s. I am guessing there is a difference between throws made in a game vs in a controlled environment.

And soccer balls can be struck harder than that. That was a rocket but he had no momentum going towards goal. That was just a turn and shoot. I bet some can get up to 75-80 mph, but that's just my opinion.

I really do not trust a lot of those numbers, especially the ones that are just Youtube titles.
The Ronaldo one was done in a Sports Science type lab and I cannot remember the exact number, but it was at least 60 MPH. It was also a ball sitting on the ground.

It sure looked like it. A ball moving even 80 MPH would not be fun to catch without some padded gloves.

I think its because you are trying to stop a soccer ball as opposed to catching a football, and the flatter surface of a soccer ball makes it sting a lot more than catching a football. Those goalie gloves are pretty damn impressive, they have great grip and padding.
