Not to start a controversy but don't think Bale deserved the POTY this time. Purely on footballing terms Suarez gets my vote (but then people will say I'm a biased) but, if not him (hate to admit this) Van Persie comes a very close second for being the deciding factor in the mancs winning number 20. Both have been consistent through the season.

On the Y-POTY I would've picked Bale with Benteke and Hazard joint second.

I don't have a huge problem with him winning POTY because without him Spurs are shite but I definitely don't think one person should be able to win both.

Yeah, I don't care a lot about the POTY either. It's always the media's flavor of the month anyways. But my issue was that anything that Bale has done in purely footballing terms, either Suarez or Van Persie have done better.

My player of the year vote would have been:

1. Luis Suarez
2. Juan Mata
3. Robin van Persie

Young player of the year for sure would have been Nastasic (sp?) followed by Benteke.

Their TOTY is laughable though.

I still don't see why Suarez would've been the winner if he wouldn't have bit Ivanovic. Bale has had a greater effect on his team as Suarez, and Spurs are in the fight for the Champions League.

But I do hate Suarez, so I'm as biased as the Pool fans.

Well, the vote happened before the biting incident, so short of pure corruption, it had absolutely zero affect on the outcome.

As has already been said, winners of this award tend to be the "flavor of the month" instead of the player who has performed the best over the course of an entire season.

Plus there will always be British favoritism in a vote of this nature.

Bale has outperformed Suarez since the beginning of the New Year, IMO.

I'm not going to argue with you. It's pointless.

Side note, Suarez was booed when his name was announced for the award. This is a formal event we're talking about. Only coaches, players and journalists are invited to an event like this. Kind of sad, but says it all really.

Suarez scored 14 goals in 2013 (10 in PL) before the ban, Bale 15 (10 in PL). That is clearly not outperforming. If it is then Suarez outperformed Bale by miles in the first half of the season and that should be taken into account. I not even going to go into shots on goal and chances created.

Edit: Added PL goals breakup.

Never mind. How about assists? He has been the crux of Spurs' entire offense. When he's not performing, they're not winning.

Suarez has more assists in the league than Bale. No idea who has more in the new year. Shouldn't matter really, the entire season needs to be taken into account.

Fun fact: Downing has more assists than Bale

A typical Hollywood team. No balance, and multiple players who occupy the same space.

Bale - 4 Assists, Suarez and Downing - 5 Assists each.

Bale total shots - 141
Suarez total shots - 187

Bale minutes per goal - 137
Suarez minutes per goal - 128

Bale is not in the top 5 clear cut chances (CCC) created Opta stats
Suarez CCC created - 15 (2nd highest in the league after Baines, and he is a striker on a midfielder or wing back)

Bale - Toe poke the ball away and run for your life football style of football
Suarez - A full bag of tricks with added bite, add salt according to your taste.

There's more. But I can't be arsed to dig everything.

(Stats from ESPNFC and Opta EPLIndex)

I think Suarez has outplayed Bale this season, no question. Same with RvP. Team success without a player is always a dangerous measuring tool (Arteta should have been POTY last year!!!!). Liverpool doesn't have depth. At all. Don't forget every other attacker got hurt in the first half of the season...and they were already undermanned.

I think Cazorla should've at least been on the short list. I'd probably take him above Bale, but I'm probably in the minority.

I absolutely agree on Mata, Beast. Not getting him last year will continue to eat at me...

I agree with this, along with Michu.

Ched Evans a convicted rapist wasn't by the same people last year. He made the League 1 TOTY. Double standards?

Like I said. He was a very close second to Suarez for me. I wouldn't have a problem with vanPersie winning. If you are trying to flame, please read my OP. If not, we agree.

I'd vote Suarez, purely because Suarez does more on the field and played in a team that completely relied on him, and I enjoy his football more. Personal preference.

There are arguments to be made for any of the players listed.

RVP is the best player on the best team in the league. He could have won it and nobody would have blinked an eye.

Felt like they were going back and forth between Bale and Suarez for 1st. Just making sure RvP wasn't being left behind.
