Ottawa Fury FC has been advised that CONCACAF is seeking to prevent Fury FC from participating in the United Soccer League (USL) in 2019.

Despite no objections from the Canadian Soccer Association (Canada Soccer) (which approved Fury FC’s 2019 participation in the USL) or the United States Soccer Federation (USSF, the USL’s governing body) to Fury FC continuing to play in the USL, a higher level of international soccer governance, CONCACAF, has unilaterally intervened to prevent Fury FC’s participation in the USL.

I sounds like they are trying to force Ottawa to play in the new Canadian league, and they decided to tell them 3 months before the season starts.

Yeah. That’s exactly what they’re doing. CONCACAF is arguing that since the CPL is finally established, there’s no need for Ottawa to be granted special permission to play in the USL anymore. But since Ottawa wasn’t expecting this to happen, they’re kind of screwed. It could cause the team to temporarily fold.

If CONCACAF tried this with one of the three Canadian MLS teams, Don Garber would tell them to frick off and prepare a massive lawsuit. The CPL might not have the resources to fight back against CONCACAF, unless the USL and MLS make a big stink about this.

I’m fine with them forcing Ottawa to move to the CPL long-term, but you can’t do that three months before the season. At least give the team a year’s notice to prepare for a totally new league.

Based on information I gathered in early 2017 The CSA had a board meeting and it was said that @OttawaFuryFC could play in NASL or USL but once @CPLsoccer started up they had to play in the CPL. John Pugh, owner of @OttawaFuryFC is on the board of the CSA and was at that meeting.
