I think he thought he´d outpace those of La Liga. Prem may be more physical, stick your leg in, but its a plodding, less positionally aware game.

Going from watching the City match to this is night and day in terms of fouls/falling to any contact.

No. He was under the impression he was being sold, and functioned that way all through preseason. It was also his pressure tactic to get RM moving on the supposed Pogba acquisition.
Nobody hates him. They simply feel they cannot count on him. He´s not shown he can lead, and above all, he is always hurt.
