National Title without Conference Title

Is 'Bama the first team to win a National Title without winning their conference title? If not overall at least in recent history.
That is similar history to LSU being the first 2 loss BCS champion.
Not trying to flame (too frustrated with Les and JJ to even care about flaming), just genuinely curious.

1950 Vols, but I guess that wasn't consensus.
Although the only reason they didn't win the conference is they played less conference games than Kentucky for some reason.

Imagine a scenario in which you got shut-out in the National title game by a team that you already beat because your coach is too stubborn (stupid?) to pull his inept QB. Incredibly frustrating, but I'm not mad.

The BCS is meeting tomorrow to make sure than they don't screw up and give a team like bama this year a free pass next time.
