Right now China probably has dozens of candidates who are working towards eventually being in positions of power in Taiwan’s government and media.
20 or 30, years from now they’ll get it without firing a shot. They simply look at things differently than pretty much everyone else and plan accordingly.

Two reasons: They wanted to wait until the Olympics were out of the way, plus they are watching the international response to Russia invading Ukraine.
