It would shield domestic fuel prices from the global shock being caused by the straits being closed, potentially force action from Great Britain, EU, Japan and China to open up the straits Just some possibilities. Totally not free market, but a reasonable theoritical discussion
So, that makes you a Democrat.
FWIW, much of what is called crude oil costs more to refine so we export it as blending stock. We still import between 4 and 5 million BPD. So the hard to refine because it requires more energy is great for production of the two lowest in profit commodities, gasoline and diesel. It doesn't make higher profit products. The means that cost of gasoline and diesel would necessarily increase to cover the shortfall.
You have zero clue about refining, profits of each product or crude oil at all.

Should’ve filled the SPR when it was $50. Especially knowing Iran was about to hit the fan.
Sounds wonderful when by law we only put two grades of crude oil into it with little able to shipped out to refineries via pipeline. The two grades were the types we imported from the MIddle East in the 1970's

Almost 1/3 is technically condensate, not actually crude oil.

It wouldn’t… doesn’t work like that… it’s also quasi-nationalizing the oil industry, no??
Not really. We had a ban placed on oil exports until relatively recently. Oil wasn't nationalized then.
The problem is we still have to import oil even though we're a net exporter. We aren't set up to refine the oil we produce here. It would take years to make that change over so it makes the most sense to do things the way we're currently doing.

most of our refineries are not set up to refine our light sweet crude into gas/diesel/jet.
Not entirely true. Yes in the Midwest they are mostly configured for heavy crude with easy access to Canada. Also 10 major refineries are partially configured for heavy and very heavy crude. Major refineries have more than one crude unit so not entirely for a single grade. All of California's refineries were configured for heavy crude because that is what was produced in California.

The US is NOT crude oil independent. We produce less than we refine. We are net energy independent due exports of natural gas, ethane, propane and butane. Though gasoline and diesel are the major products of crude oil, each is not as profitable as other products.
